A Facebook marketing guide for authors is an invaluable resource, providing clear guidance on best practices from setting up a Facebook page, and designing engaging posts that reach potential readers, to getting more followers and building brand recognition. Utilizing Facebook effectively can help authors expand their reach, grow their fanbase, and increase sales for their books.

However, the scenario today is quite different. Due to many changes that happened over time, Facebook doesn’t generate the number of leads it used to. Hence I thought of writing this blog post and help you understand Facebook Marketing better.

# Facebook Marketing for Writers and Authors: Then VS Now

There was a time when Facebook had quality traffic toward the pages related to writing and budding authors. However, the scenario is not the same anymore. The pages that had a huge following now barely show up in the news feeds. Why? There are three major reasons.

• Facebook changed its algorithms over time.
• Similar pages clamored the social networks beyond requirements.
• Due to insta-news and articles, people began to lose interest in long write-ups.

Let me elaborate on these points more.

# Facebook and its Algorithms

Over time, Facebook changed its algorithms. What do I mean by that? The thing is, Facebook decided to implement certain mechanisms that helped the major news portals to surface at the top of news feeds, and the smaller ones went to the bottom. A killer (traffic-killer, of course) move, of course, but Facebook had to focus on the posts that actively provided people with authentic material, and hence they began eradicating the inactive ones. Plus, they focused on user engagements, which made the pages with no interaction lose their places in people’s feeds – and still continue to do so. They roll out frequent updates these days, so it’s a problem for the people who aren’t active and popular in their circles.

# Clamoring of Writers and Authors

Every day thousands of new Authors come up and either they or their publishers create Facebook pages for them under the claim of social media marketing. The scenario is such intense that every other page that pops up in my suggestions tells me that the person is an Author or Writer. Compared to the supply, the demand is pretty low. Only the giant pages manage to get away from these issues and stay in the game. Also the easy options of ‘Sponsored ads’ give away a major tool to the promoters, which results in your pages getting unusually lower traffic.

# The Insta-Influenced World

The completely new concept of insta-reads (pardon my sarcasm here): instapoems, instanews, instablogs, instathat, and instathis – everything offered to people is now packaged in tiny bits, which they tend to read more. And why won’t they? They can just scroll on their screens, get a glimpse of the insta-posts, and within a few seconds, they can read the entire thing. Relatable, right? It indeed is. We all do that. Only a few of us stop by and read long articles to savor the impact those make on us. But everyone won’t. Nope.

# How to stand out from the Crowd and create your own Reader base

The major question! How to fight the ever-changing algorithms of Facebook and the tastes of readers? There are multiple options. I’d elaborate on those – some are Facebook-centric and some, are things to be done outside Facebook.

Blog: Create a blog and actively write about things that you wish to share with people. As the blog is entirely your own feed, people won’t find a way to escape it and they would read it without any disturbance. Ask them to comment on their feedback, and you should actively engage in what they have to say.

Write multi-part short stories on Facebook: Write a short story. Break it down into parts of 300 – 500 words each. Share one chapter per week. That way your readers will be curious about your writing. Try to leave the parts on cliffhangers.

Give away free ebooks: The way I do. I published two poetry collections and kept them active for a month, Into the Dense & I Wanna Know, which were available for free downloads. Into the Dense had crossed a whopping number of 750 downloads and I Wanna Know, more than 1400! Those statistics assured me that readers would definitely want to read you, just that it’d be more when you give your stuff for free. Also, who doesn’t like free stuff, right? We all do.

Participate in active writing groups: Many people think that keeping Authors in their profiles will benefit them for their own popularity, and that is so not true. Your popularity is solely dependent on what YOU do. So go into the writing-related groups – the active ones, if I may add – and notice what people talk about. And if you have any input, don’t hesitate to give it. Make sure you give positive feedback. Honesty is the best policy, I understand, but humbleness MUST be your first priority.

# What are the Most Efficient Ways to Generate Engagements using Facebook?

Don’t share more and don’t share less.

This is one rule that most bloggers today ignore. I have seen bloggers sharing nothing but their blog posts and sharing a blog post out of nowhere too. Both of these practices result in a fall in your blog’s traffic. Why? Because in the first case, your friends and readers know that you keep writing and sharing blog posts (and the blog posts might not be helpful to them), hence they’ll face a lack of curiosity in your content and eventually stop visiting your blog; and the second category, let’s say, is popular among their friends and circles but they never openly admit that they are bloggers and share a blog post saying:

‘Hey! Look, I blogged today! Go read!’

“Nah. Thanks. I don’t want to open it. By the way, you blog?”

So keep in mind, your visitors must know that you blog! Tell them that you do and let them know that you’d like them to read and provide feedback on your posts.

But while sharing the posts, make sure you keep a proper gap. Maybe share one blog post per 5 – 10 normal Facebook posts. That’d keep a nice balance.

Time and tide wait for no one. But for bloggers, they do!

Honestly, I have found that the time post 8 pm IST (for Indian bloggers) is the best time to share blog posts. Why do I say this when blogs related to tech, food, etc. are shared in the daytime? Well, let’s see.

The audience mostly spends their daytime looking at posts and memes on Facebook. They might be in their offices working and taking breaks to surf midway, or sitting idle waiting for their friends to come online after their college hours. The possibilities are endless. The reason why Tech, food, etc. blogs run in the daytime is that they can be read in the shortest span of time. Let’s say, there’s a new mobile launched in the market. What’d most normal readers do? Open the link, read the specifications of the phone, check the images, the price, and the final verdict of the blogger. That’s it. You read one blog post within 30 seconds to 1 minute!

On the contrary, it’s not the same with the blogs of writers and authors. There’s no scope to miss words in the article while reading them. So your readers tend to read it at night or midnight when they are relaxing after a tiring day and surfing articles to ‘read’ while having their dinner or lying in bed.

Bonus tip: My Analytics tells me that most of the visitors to my site come during weekends (mostly Saturdays) post 11 pm. You know why I pointed this out; use it!

Build Ultra Strong Connections with your Readers & Bloggers

A point that I keep repeating repeatedly. To state it short and sweet: Go out and talk with your readers. Ask them to share your blog post if they enjoyed reading it. Contact other bloggers in your circles who blog in similar niches and ask them to share your article with their readers if they think their readers will find it useful.

Have faith

Have faith. Your blog’s following will increase eventually. There’s no need to rank the highest or gain the highest traffic as soon as you start the blog. Build loyal readers and you’ll see a huge increase in your traffic soon.

Be patient and consistent. The other day, one of my writer friends pinged me. “Bro, every time I post something, the number of people reading my posts lessens. I don’t know what to do! This market is killing my passion.”

I asked, ‘How often do you post?’

He said, “Once or twice a month.”

I immediately understood his mistake: he wasn’t consistent. The readers waited for updates from him, but he never posted anything on time. It was his convenience. If that is so, I firmly assert that keep the least expectations. You need to be consistent to gain a following.

And results aren’t achieved in a day. Or a week. Or even a month. It takes time. You need to make a planner and continue posting your stuff, even if there’s only one person reading it.

Choose only one social media platform as VIP (Very Important Platform)

I rarely see this advice given to someone. But here’s the take: Posting everywhere and expecting traffic from everywhere and trying to optimize your reach for all the social media platforms are going to do nothing but give you divided and mixed results (needless to say, inconsistent too). So focus on only one platform.

Blog posts can be marketed on Facebook.

Quotes can be posted on Instagram and WhatsApp stories.

Useful snippets can be shared on Quora.

Blog post excerpts – use LinkedIn.

It’d be a lot easier to gain following that way.

Stay updated with writing trends and complain less.

The most essential part of marketing. Don’t look over the fences, stay in yours and try to expand inside it. Don’t cocoon yourself either. Be bold and go out and just freaking tell people that you are writing/wrote a book and make them read your stuff. If you are doubtful about telling them to read, just do one thing, initiate a conversation.

“Hello!”

“Are you free? I wanted you to see something. Actually, read something. Only if you are free.”

“Yeah sure. Send me. I hope it’s not horror. Or else I’d get spooked out.”

“Hahahaha. Nope. It’s abstract. I am just trying my hands at new things, you see…”

“Do tell me how you liked it. Here you go: {link}”

“Cool, will get back to you after reading it.”

That’s it. If they don’t revert, no issues. There might be at least one person who’d tell you that he/she read it and found it awesome! Just don’t stop employing your efforts.

Why blog?

That’s one of the most important questions that need to be answered. 

If you are a writer or author, you need a blog to drive a consistent and religious follower base to your work. 

If I compare blog posts with Facebook posts (or posts on social media platforms in general), Facebook posts don’t stay segregated in different categories and if a person is visiting your Facebook page for the first time, it’s natural that the person would decide to stay on your page depending on what you had posted most recently. To know more about you, the person would wander around a bit, which is a time-consuming process. 

However, with a blog, you are in control of what the visitor sees first, and you can definitely put your most loved posts under the featured category. If a visitor reads one of your posts and goes to the homepage, he/she will find a static homepage that you want to show them. 

Here’s mine:

Notice how I designed it in a way that the site visitor immediately gets to know what I do and what are my skills. 

In short, that’s the case: You are in complete control of your blog. You can design and structure it your own way, and show the visitors just what you want them to see. 

Plus, you get constant and regular traffic, as your subscribers immediately get to know when you post something on the blog. With social media platforms – Facebook for example – your readers might not see the post ever at all.

# To build a loyal Reader base

Person A visits your site. He finds your blog informative. He reads your posts and decides to visit your blog more often. Because he likes your blog. And that’s where you earn a reader. 

A writer needs a loyal reader base to whom they don’t need to market every time they blog. A website is a great abode for this cause. You can employ live notifications or email newsletters to let the readers know every time you blogged something. Without a doubt, a loyal reader base will give you higher conversions.  

# It helps you create a definite platform for marketing yourself and your books

A website gives you the freedom to create separate pages for your branding. You could create a homepage where you can speak about yourself and your books, or create separate pages where you can list all your books and an elaborate bio of you. 

A great example of a separate book page is Neil D’Silva’s page for his debut Maya’s New Husband. He has created a visually appealing page and segregated everything into different sections:

Your blog is your Brand. There, I said it. The look of your blog defines the kinds of things you write. A reader or visitor will strongly remember a visual representation of your works rather than something that he found on social media. An About Me page will help you brand yourself as a writer or author. So don’t neglect the power of a well-made and well-written blog. It will benefit you in some or another way.

How to start a blog?

Now blogging for writers could be tricky. However, I have simplified a lot of things below. Here’s a brief overview of how you can start blogging using Content Management Systems. For now, I shall cover platforms like WordPress and Blogger. Let’s dive into them.

# How to start blogging for free / without an investment?

If you are willing to start a blog today, kudos to you! You’re about to take a major step in your writing journey.

Here are two platforms that offer you free blogging solutions, including content writer/editor, content uploads, and basic SEO support: 

1. Blogger.
2. WordPress.

Before I go ahead and explain their workings, here’s a minimal comparison chart for both platforms.

Blogger

Google’s very own blogging platform, Blogger is a choice of many bloggers around the world. It allows you to set up a blog within a few steps as it logs in using your Gmail account. 

Features you get with a free Blogger account: 

1. Google Storage Space – similar to Google Drive.
2. A repository of HTML templates – you may check here or here.
3. An HTML-based content writing system. 
4. Widgets for adding extra details to your blog – however, many of the widgets are only visible on desktops and not mobile devices.
5. Inbuilt dashboard to integrate your blog with Google Analytics and track visitor count and other site traffic details.
6. Prime feature: Add your own Top Level or Other Domain(s) for free. 

Search Engine Optimization for Blogger

Blogger doesn’t provide you with extensive SEO tools, so you have to rely solely on the content and its formatting. You can’t expect great results for your blog, however, you can do certain things to optimize your blog for the search engines. I shall specify a list of SEO optimizations you could do in your Blogger blog later in this article.

Monetization

If you blog regularly for 6 months, Google allows you to monetize your website using Google Adsense. You could then place ad codes in your blog and start earning. 

WordPress

There are two variants: WordPress.com and WordPress.org. We are going to speak about WordPress.com here. Alike Blogger, WordPress.com has a free plan; and also certain others for which you need to pay. WordPress.com is a relatively richer platform for bloggers, and offers certain things that Blogger doesn’t, like showing the Widgets the same way across all devices. 

Features you get with a free WordPress account:

1. Storage Space of up to 3 GB.
2. Free inbuilt themes – customizable using the inbuilt customizer.
3. A WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) and HTML-based content writing system.
4. Compatibility of the widgets across all devices.
5. Inbuilt dashboard (Jetpack) for checking the view count and other analytics. 
6. Basic SEO optimization – inbuilt meta title and meta description boxes.  

Search Engine Optimization for WordPress

WordPress.com’s free plan (and even other plans) come with a Jetpack extension installed. Jetpack handles the SEO, social sharing, spam blocking, and stats of your blog, which is definitely an upper hand when it comes to comparing WordPress with Blogger. It provides several tools in each posts (which Blogger merely does), which can help you optimize your content for SEO a bit more. Again, you can’t keep high hopes for ranking into SERPs using the free plan, but it’s sufficient for you to start your journey as a blogger. 

Monetization

WordPress.com runs its own ads on the free plans to keep the plans free forever. This means you cannot opt for running your own ads on your blog. For disabling ads and use your own custom domain, you’d need to upgrade your free plan, the list of which you can find here. You may offer freelance services through your blog to earn outside WordPress. 

SEO Optimization Tips For Blogger And WordPress

It’s no surprise that self-hosted websites can easily outrank free blog URLs. Google doesn’t like doing business with free blogs because it doesn’t treat them as sincere attempts at blogging. Although there are some free blogs that rank high on Google for some competitive keywords, those blog posts are mostly content-rich and old and have a lot of backlinks (backlinks are basically your blog’s links mentioned in other sites’ blog posts), so much so that Google has no choice but to rank them for rich user experience. Keep in mind one thing: SEO for free blogs is highly limited. There are certain things you can employ to rank higher, but your content is your only strength to go up the ranks. If your content is weak, there’s no scope for it to rank.

Here are four tips that you can employ on your free blogs (exercising our goal of understanding both blogging for writers & blogging for authors), which will give your posts a notable amount of boost.

1. Use Short URLs for your blog posts.

Blogger uses dates before the URLs, which pretty much is a bad practice. However, you can work around the slug to optimize it for search engines. 

WordPress on the other hand gives you an option to manually insert short slugs, which you can use to optimize your blog posts the right way. 

Short Slugs / URLs are a great way to increase traffic because statistically speaking: Short URLs rank better on Google. 

You can find the setting in Blogger while posting your blog post. In the right sidebar, choose the option titled Permalink:

Click on Custom Permalink, and change the blog post slug from (example here) sample-blog-post-that-has-long-title to sample-blog-post.

Hit on Done and there you go! Now you have a shorter URL!

For WordPress, you can find the option next to your content box under ‘More Options’. 

 2. Don’t add Tags to Blog Posts.

Google has specified over and over again that Google SERP does not consider tags in posts and post categories as ranking factors. There are instances where post categories rank better, but post tags? Nah. They don’t help you even a bit for boosting your organic traffic! Even I used to follow the practice to add tags until I understood that tags do nothing but help people search your blog posts better… ONLY on your blog. So add one to two tags, and that’s it.

3. Use your target keyword at least once in 300 words.

Let’s say you are writing a blog called ‘How to write quality content’. So here, ‘quality content’ is your target keyword. So you should include these two words in your blog posts in different sentences per 250 to 300 words. That’d make Google understand the content better.

Bonus tip: Whenever someone comments on your post, make sure you use the target keywords in your replies. That helps more.

4. Write thorough content & Keep the blog’s look simple.

One of the most common things that bloggers with free domains overlook is the look of their blogs. Many of them go for fancy looking themes and templates. But that’s a concern. Your blog must be appealing to your readers and not just you. If you are writing long content, make sure your blog’s theme makes the text easily readable on both mobile and desktop browsers. If not, change the theme. That’ll drive more traffic to your blog and increase user engagement.

#Self Hosted Blogs

As a writer or author (or a blogger in general), it’s always advisable to have a self-hosted blog. There are many Content Management Systems that offer you easy website design options for a certain price including WordPress, Wix, Weebly, and SquareSpace; however, I shall be speaking about only WordPress here because it is one of the most flexible website hosting platforms, holds great potential, and is the primary choice of most bloggers around the world (and also because I am very well accustomed to it – this website is designed on WordPress too).

To state in short, you’ll need these four things for a WordPress website: 

1. A custom domain.
2. A Hosting Service. 
3. Installable files for WordPress if you are installing WordPress using FTP. 
4. A WordPress theme.

This was a brief about creating a Self Hosted WordPress blog. Now let’s go to the next part, why Self-hosted blogs can work wonders in competition with free blogs.

# Self-Hosted Blogs VS Free Blogs

It is no surprise that self-hosted blogs do much better in comparison with the free options for blogging. You are the owner of the website when it comes to self-hosting, and you can do whatever you want on it – until you abide by the terms and conditions of the hosting space provider. Let’s delve into the topic of free vs paid blogs.

Storage

When it comes to running a blog on a hosting server, the loading speed, the content uploads, and all other things that concern your blog depend on the hosting space that you have purchased. Most of the time even 20 GB SSD disk space is sufficient to run a daily blog, considering that the amount of site traffic isn’t huge (like really yuuuuuge). Here are some of the hosting services that I recommend (all the links contain special discounted prices):

Design

Free blogs have limited designing options, but with the self-hosted WordPress installation, you get instant access to a repository of over 12,000 free and premium themes. If you don’t want to use pre-made themes, there are many site-builder plugins available too.

Ad Monetization 

One of the biggest advantages of a self-hosted website is having the freedom to monetize it the way you want it. Although there’s a catch here too: you’d need to wait for approvals – which, sometimes – can be tiresome. However, this process could be faster if you’re blogging regularly. 

Here are the top three ad/affiliate networks that you can sign into today and start monetizing your website and generate revenue:

1. Google AdSense: Google’s very own ad monetization network. Sign up once your site is ready with at least 20 – 25 blog posts and request approval. Google has some strict approval terms, so you’d need to wait till you get the desired result, i.e., the approval. Once approved, you can start placing ads on your website and in between the content, or simply run Google’s Auto Ads feature and add the code to your website. Done!
   
2. Media.net: Powered by Yahoo! and Bing, Media.net is a powerful contender to Google Adsense. Media.net has one of the easiest sign up processes, but again, it has some of the most strict approval terms too. So sign up for the service today and get started with running ads on your website!
   
3. Amazon Associates: Let’s say you want to recommend a list of books that you like. You create a list with all the required details and as you are about to post it on the blog, you realize that you would not generate any revenue for all these efforts. That’s where Amazon’s Affiliate Program comes in handy! Simply sign up to Amazon Associates, get done with the breezy easy signup process, and get your account up and running! Search for the books in your list, generate their links and embed them in your blog post inside texts or images – up to you. Blog Posts

Although I have stated that the blog posts are unlimited, I have considered blog posts that only comprise of texts and not images. If you’re adding images, it counts as content uploads – and the blog posts would then be restricted according to your hosting space, be it free or paid. Even with or without unlimited hosting spaces, there shouldn’t be much of a problem for you when it comes to blog posts. 

Custom Brand Emails

 With free blogging platforms, you won’t get a custom email if you don’t have a domain. If you have a domain and are hosted on free platforms, again, you’d need affordable services like GSuite or Zoho to set up your custom email addresses (like contact@example.com). However, if you are self-hosting, almost all the hosting services provide an option to create your custom brand email addresses along with the hosting plan. So you would not need to worry about that part.

Analytics

With self-hosted websites, you get the flexibility of using any Analytics programs other than inbuilt stats and Google Analytics. This could be a huge plus point for you to understand your target audience and their engagement with the website. Along with using Google Analytics, I use a free Analytics service called QuantCast to understand my audiences and their preferences better.

SEO

I own two different blogs. One is a free WordPress blog, and the other one is this website, a self-hosted WordPress solution. When it comes to SEO, I have been implementing a dozen of techniques on this blog, which wouldn’t be possible to employ on my free blog. Here are two instances that’ll help you understand it better. Let me hit up a search for the most basic term that relates to my blog: ‘Aniruddha Pathak’.

As you can see, my website ranks on the first page of Google at the first spot. And when it comes to my free WordPress blog, here is the result.

Page seven. Even when both the title and content have Aniruddha Pathak as the keyword.

Fun fact, my free blog contains four times more blog posts than my current – this – website.

And that’s what we are going to delve into ahead. The prime question is – Is content everything for a blog to gain traffic? 

#Content and Design in Blogging for Writers & Blogging for Authors: An Overview

Let me tell you a short story based on real events. 

Back in late 2018, Max decided to blog passionately. He used to use a free less popular blogging platform first – now extinct – and decided to shift to Blogger. 

But one thing that he never took his site’s design and content seriously. He sought all the different things – parking and transferring the domain, focusing on how he got clients and how generously he was getting paid; but again, his blog’s usability sucked big time, which resulted in rather low website traffic and more loading time. He wanted it all shiny and glittery. And yes, he never took anyone’s feedback regarding that; he was stubborn. 

It’s the year 2023, and now he is stuck with the same design. However, he doesn’t receive any traffic and blogs rarely – has no projects whatsoever. He made a few mistakes along the line and ended up losing all his potential clients. 

So what do we need to learn from him?

Don’t be stubborn with your blog’s design.

You need to make sure that your blog/website is appealing to your readers. There’s no need to design a blog that looks shiny and highly customized. You need to make sure that the site loads faster, has a minimal design, and has fonts that are easy to read. Because in the end, it’s only about your visitors and users. They are the ones who are going to make your blog popular. So seek feedback from them when you design your blogs.

Format your content properly.

Highlighting all the key stuff that you find in your blog post is highly irritating for your readers. Segregate the sections of your blog posts into Headings, pictures, and paragraphs.

Add relevant images, GIFs, and memes.

Pretty much a self-explanatory tip. Don’t just keep writing as if you are writing an essay. Make the content more appealing using graphics. Studies show that content with images is highly read and remembered more than a blog post with no images. 

Bonus info: Use Canva to create your unique promotional banners and images.

Always put your visitors and readers first.  

Your visitors probably visit a dozen websites in a day. They know what they like and they know what they don’t. So if they tell you that your blog posts are hard to read – take note and start working. Always think about how a visitor would like your site. No need to extra components and features. Readers are visiting your blog to read content – present it to them pretty directly and neatly. Don’t add so many buttons and so many redirects from various pages. Keep them as low as possible. The more buttons you ask them to press, the more likely they are to leave your website. User experience matters. A lot.

That’s where my (invented) technique comes into play: The Altitude Technique.

The Altitude Technique

So what’s the technique? For the last two years, I have been noticing the writers and authors who put out stories on their blogs, and share them on social media and with their readers, but for the organic traffic part, they get stuck. There might be a few readers who Google search to find their story, but what about the others? How would they know the name of your story and why would they search for particularly your stories? Hence, I worked on something that today I call The Altitude Technique. I experimented with it on several blogs and voila! I could see a significant increase in site traffic. So what is the technique? And how can you employ it on your blog too? Let’s begin with an elaborate walk-through of how you can implement my methods for gaining more reads on your stories. 

# Design your blog

Two of the most important things are to design your blog and keep all the pages ready. The homepage, the About Me page, Contact Form, a separate category page for your stories – you may even break them down into different genres – and other pages that are equally necessary to keep your readers engaged with your website. The visitor should be able to check all the things that you want them to see on your abode – yes, abode; because you must decorate and tidy your website like your home – and those things shouldn’t be clustered at all. 

The trend is to stay minimal, so there’s no need to make a funky-dunky website. Keep it smooth and simple. That’s it. 

# Start posting stories and share them everywhere possible 

Once you are done designing your blog, post the stories – both finished and ongoing – on your website and highlight them on the homepage. Add popups, email sign-ups, homepage sections, and sidebars to your site, and tell your visitors that you write stories and write-ups! Let them know about the awesome reviews you’ve gotten so far and make them curious. And as writers, generating curiosity in the readers’ minds is easy, right? 

Although I recommend writing write-ups related to only one genre as Google doesn’t like doing business with a website with multiple approaches. But if you are an abstract writer, then no worries! I have given a solution in point number three. That’ll help you a lot.

One more essential thing: Share your stories everywhere possible. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Medium, and all the other social platforms. The standard template of how to share the write-ups on LinkedIn and Medium are:

# Write content apart from your stories and promote it 

Ah, here comes the player! 

Let’s say you post write-ups related to romance. You’ve constantly been doing so for the last ten blog posts and your traffic stays constant. But one thing that you notice is that you aren’t generating any traffic apart from that. You think to yourself: Is Romance not a thing anymore? Should I switch to any other genre? And you keep wondering what’s wrong with your blog. 

These situations arise and it’s fine. But what if I tell you that there’s one easy way you can work around this issue and generate more traffic? You’d give me a ‘Hell yeah!’ So here’s what you can do. 

Pick a genre you’re successful in. For the record, let’s say you are an expert in the genre of romance. And if you are writing on romance as we established earlier, you need to write some content apart from your prose and poems. You can write a blog post about “10 Best Romance Books I have ever Read”, “7 Essential Tips to Write Great Romance” or some “How to?” guides on writing engaging romance scenes.

For example, I’ll take the blog post titled “10 Best Romance Books I have ever read”. So how could you write a blog post based on this title?

• Make a list of 10 best reads (that goes without saying)
• Find relevant cover images of all those books 
• In the title of those books, add affiliate links to those books
• Write short reviews of each book and your experience reading them 
• Bonus tip: Write more than 1890 words of content – this is because it’ll help you rank higher in Google searches for relevant keywords
  
• Ask your readers what their favorite romantic reads are 
• Reply to each comment on the blog posts and social media 

And that’s pretty much it! 

Why this would work, you ask? Because your visitors KNOW that these books exist and they are up to offer their opinions too! This is just one example I gave. For other genres, just replace “Romance” with your genre and write articles and share it everywhere! Yay! 

# Drive that traffic to your stories and book sales

So you now wrote the blog post. But one thing that we didn’t talk about is how to optimize your content in such a way that your stories get read too. (And books get sold too?) 

The key is to mention your story inside your content in the most relevant places. For example, in Top 10 Romance Reads I have ever Read, if there’s a book that has a character similar to yours, let your readers know about it. Quote it below the book: “Just like Max, John is also facing problems with his love life. Can you help him know the solutions? Click here to read what John is up to nowadays.” 

Needless to say, John is your character and the Click here text redirects the visitor to your story or book. A smart workaround, nay? Start working today and make your blog an awesome avenue for your visitors! 

Bonus tip: For book reviewers, write nine book reviews and one blog post with a list of the books/authors that you liked reading. 

Conclusion

Let’s get straight to the point.

One thing that I can definitely state now is that there are countless self-publishing houses in India today. Each day (not really each day, but yes, on a regular basis) I see a publishing house emerging out of nowhere. Additionally, most of them are self-publishers. And what is their favorite hobby? Publishing a Paid Anthology!

The other day I was strolling in my Facebook group to find a dozen promotional posts done by the new self publishing houses. And some of them had the glorious (read terribly created) banners asking for writers to submit their stories to them and they’d publish them in an Anthology! Aww, they are giving the unrecognized writers an opportunity to publish their works! Sweet, right? Probably not.

They had a clause which stated the ‘Selected’ writers would need to pay them some amount to get published. In return the concerned publishing house hadn’t promised anything (except for editing the book which was done by some unknown bestselling(?) author). Not even basic marketing. Now you’d say that ‘Who would be that stupid to fall for their offer? We are grown up and mature writers!’ Well that’s where you go wrong. They published the Anthology with freaking 40 co-authors! And since then, I haven’t heard of the publishing house ever. Neither do I know the writers (ahem, Authors) who were published in that book.

So why do I not recommend participating in Paid Anthologies?

#The publishers show you false dreams.

Wanna be a Published Author? Who doesn’t want to, right? Well, that’s the string that they pull the young writers with.

Their meeting probably goes like this:

P1: Sir, no books to publish, sir…
P2: Hmm…
P1: So what should we do?
P2: Hmm…
P1: Speak, sir…
P2: We can do one thing!
P1: What, sir?
P2: Let’s publish an Anthology! Create a banner from some online site and post in the groups and ask money from the writers. Many writers are idiots anyway…we will get at least a few of them. Select all the entries and boom! We are rich!
P1: What an idea, sir…You are Gawd sir…charan sparsh, sir…

Well, long story short: They show those writers some dreams and get them on board. Promises, promises, promises. And while delivering, nothing.

Paid Anthologies (most of them) will not help you grow as a writer or author.
You read that right. Getting clamored in a pile of other writers that you don’t know can help you with nothing. You cannot get your works read the way you expected it to be read by the readers. Basically, zero growth towards your goal of becoming a renowned author.

#Paid Anthologies in India: No one markets the book properly. Not even the publishers.

I have been a part of two anthologies till now. And I can tell that my co-authors didn’t put in the efforts for marketing the book. And after a while (after like two-three posts), even my publishers stopped promoting it. One of those anthologies had 4 sales! Well, all 4 of ’em books were bought by us authors anyway. Bleh.

So yeah, that’s a huge drawback of anthologies. The marketing strategies just don’t work (and the people don’t work as well).

#Here comes the money!

One of the most idiotic things with paid anthologies is that they ask money for publishing your story. So basically the writers who are participating are self-publishing the anthology. That means you are a bunch of new writers collectively giving money to…self publish books? Henh? I wonder why no one has ever raised that point till now.

Never should you pay money for your creativity. You should be paid instead. It’s different when you are self publishing your work. And it’s entirely different when you are self publishing your works in a you-never-knew-how-it-became-a-team team.

#So what is the best way to get published in a Paid Anthology?

JUST DON’T.

 When I looked to self publish my book in 2016, I had a fewer options than I have today. People had the notion that traditionally published books do a lot better than the self-published books, and that was a huge barrier while marketing. But today, the scenario has completely changed. The readers now judge the books according to the content that they bear, and not just the publishers with whom they are published. This massive change has surely paved a way for the authors who want to shine in the world of books in spite of being self published. It’s now much easier to self publish books in India.  In this article, I am going to share all the knowledge that I have gained over years regarding self-publishing books and their market.

What is self publishing? 

Simple answer: In Self Publishing, you are the publisher of your book. You take all the measures to launch your craft in the market and take upon all the things required to do so. 

Why self publish books?

That’s the question that arises in the mind of upcoming authors. Until now, the pattern for getting a book published was pretty simple. Find a traditional publisher, write a mail of submission to them, and wait till a response is received.

With the emergence of self publishing solutions and houses, the process is now a lot simpler. If you have a manuscript ready, you can either go for the free mode of self publishing or pay to the publishers and they will set up everything for you – from book cover design to online/offline distribution. It’s a pretty straightforward approach (read business) if sought. That means it becomes a three-step hassle-free process for you. Find the publisher, provide the manuscript and details, and bam! You are now a published Author. That simple.

Like Rohan Govenkar, the author of two books – 1000 Kilograms of Goa & Oh My Goddess! – states:

“Self-publishing has enabled many writers to see their dream turn into fruition, given that the journey to getting one’s book traditionally published is long, tiring and often frustrating. The positive side of this is that if a writer has enough confidence in his work and his ability to market it, he can at least overcome one large hurdle – of not receiving a platform.”

That’s how it goes.

When to self publish?

When you are confident enough to do so. Yes. 

Imagine that you have written a book and have sent several proposals to various traditional publishing houses. You are very well aware that you have written a script that will sell, will amuse readers and will be a distinct read – a story never written before. And now you have to wait. Some publishers give you a replying time of 6 months, whereas some say it will not take more than 15 days. And you are hesitant to get published with new traditional publishing houses as you fear that your book won’t get the required exposure. So you wait and wait. For one mail of acceptance. 

Sounds familiar? Trust me, I did the same. I sent my script to some giant publishers too but never received a mail back in spite of multiple follow-ups. I felt disappointed. 

Hence, I chose the road to self publishing. Honestly, there’s not much a difference here. I have heard success stories of self published authors, and those are heartwarming. I have come across several traditionally published authors, who feel that they weren’t marketed well so their books didn’t do well at all.

If you have the confidence that you have written an exceptional book and that you are capable of marketing and selling books, self publishing could be the right choice for you.

Let’s get into the next part of this now. Let’s see what makes a self published book better.

What should you do before considering self publishing your craft?

Understand your audience.

Know what type of audience you want to target. You wouldn’t want to market to the ones who are uninterested. That way you will waste your resources.

Plan the marketing strategies.

Every successful self-published author knows the importance of marketing. Marketing strategies can include basic concepts like sharing excerpts of your works in your circles even one year prior to their publishing. You need to maintain a buzz. Most importantly, get your audience engaged and develop accordingly. Without marketing, you are at a huge loss.

Set up social media accounts.

One of the things that writers overlook. It’s always better to set up social media promotional accounts, including a Facebook Page, Twitter account, and Instagram account, and share relevant things related to your work there. That gives your readers a definite place to find all the stuff that you write. 

Set up a Blog.

Along with all the promotional tactics you work on, starting a blog of your own is worth the investment. A website helps you brand yourself as an author and acts as a one-stop place for all your marketing needs. Get a website designer, set up all the required pages and information about you and your book, and start blogging! Help the community of us writers and authors, write something about what you love, post stories and prose, or redirect your readers to the website to let them more about yourself! Getting a website for yourself is a mandatory step in today’s era of digital marketing.

Don’t ever hesitate to promote your craft.

From my own experience, I have learned that self published authors hesitate to promote their books in public. Events, promotional media, all that is fine, but one shouldn’t fall short of words while telling people that they have written a book and they would like everyone to know about it. I know it feels bad while over-promoting things, but remember the Golden 7 rule. If a viewer sees your promos more than 7 times, they are more likely to check your book out, if not buy. That counts as a success, no? Even though a smaller one, but still. Build curiosity for the people. Don’t give too much, and don’t give too less either.

Have you gotten your script edited by a professional editor? Why is it important?

When I finished writing and self-editing my debut, , I immediately looked out for editors. Being in the circles for over two years, I learned the importance of manuscript editing. But why get it edited? 

Even though my book was self-edited over a dozen times, my editor, Jesal Jani her name, pointed out a dozen pages full of errors. I noticed some points that I hadn’t considered ever before, and she was right. I had left some loopholes as well, which she helped me fill. I am proud of my decision of hiring an editor, which made my book what it is today.

A famous saying goes like this: “Even the editor needs an editor.”

And it’s absolutely true. Your readers want a grammatically and plot-wise flawless, if not perfect, craft from you, and it is your moral duty to deliver the same to them. Your story is all about your way of expressing, I understand, but not delving into its core fundamentals can prove to be a big turn-off for your readers. So it’s mandatory to get it edited.

Adding further, I have heard many upcoming authors saying that they would just write a script and hand it over to the editor, and an editor will do all the work. Wrong. Entirely wrong.

An editor’s work is to add the required glare to your work, and not fix everything that you left unnoticed. Neil D’Silva explains the big NOS for an Editor in his elaborate blog post, and also states the role of editors in your journey. He says: “Editors are not a trashcan where authors can dump half-baked, poorly-written, and poorly-constructed manuscripts. You, as an author, have to make sure your manuscript is as good as you can make it before submitting it to an editor.”

So before getting published, make sure you get your manuscript edited. 

Now comes the most important question: How to self publish my book?

There are multiple ways to get self-published. The notion that only traditionally published books make it big is now not so true. So how to proceed? Let’s get into the details. 

If you prefer to get published with an ebook, you can head over to Kindle Direct Publishing, and follow the steps-takes at most 24 hours for your book to get live. There are many authors who made it big using KDP, Neil D’Silva, Rasana Atreya, Sudha Nair, Sundari Venkatraman, etc. are just a few names who made a huge impact as self-published authors. The process of publishing the ebook on Amazon is buttery smooth and won’t require any technical knowledge at all. 

Now, let’s get to the next one, the free Print-on-Demand publishing route. 

Sites like Pothi, FreeSelfPublish, and White Falcon Publishing allow you to publish paperbacks for free. Yes, totally free. You just need to upload your manuscript and a paperback cover. They will take things ahead. For the free plan, they host the books on their own online stores, but if you want to extend to popular online stores like Amazon & Flipkart, you need to pay a minimal fee for the same. And you are good to go. But here, you need to understand that the prices of the books are pretty much high. Most of the free self publishing solutions (for paperbacks) I saw work on the ‘prepaid transactions only’ basis-reasonable enough, as they print on demand-and could affect the sales of your books.

Let’s talk a bit more about this. This is what Pothi clarifies the things to consider in the publishing route I stated above and speaks about itself too:

Pothi.com is a provider of publishing tools, services and a platform. When I looked for self-publishing houses, I found various houses that offered multiple services at various prices, some expensive and some cheap. The drawback here was that my books would’ve been priced higher than expected – in regards to the pages that my book had. So yes, when I searched for a self-publishing house to go with, I found many of them through the internet. Just hit up a search for the term ‘Self-publishing houses in India’ and you would a dozen of them instantly. So yes, let’s get to those now. I will wrap up the introductory part quickly.

There are some giants in the self publishing business and some new and cheap ones. The established ones charge comparatively higher than the lesser-known ones. Many a time we get confused with such high variance at prices and end up taking opinions from other authors.

What is the difference between all of these houses? Why do some charge high and why some are low? Practically they all offer the same kind of services, but the difference lies in the way they execute those things. I have met authors published under bigger houses, and heard mixed reviews from them. Some are very satisfied with the service they received, on the other hand, some detest it. I cannot add my own insight about them here because I haven’t worked with any of them. But the one with whom I published my book, I can say that I had a satisfactory experience, if not on a par with the veterans. They delivered what they promised. So do all the other popular self publishing houses. It’s all about personal choices and your understanding of the approach to these things. Self publishing houses that offer packages are growing – a lot, in fact.

Bonus Question: How do I design a cover for free for my ebook?

Head right over to Canva. It gives you a huge repository of ready-made cover designs. Add the title of your book and your name as Author and download it. Done!

Key Question: What are the advantages and dis-advantages of self publishing?

I have seen many aspiring authors wondering about this. How would self publishing benefit me? Or would it turn out to be a bitter experience? 

Varun Prabhu of Pen Paper Coffee sums it up in one answer.

“Self-publishing has indeed given a way for good authors whose books haven’t been picked up by trade ones because the latter did not find them commercially viable or for some other reason. A lot of authors are indeed finding success.

Whereas, at the same time, we are finding that a lot of authors who think it best to put up any kind of content out there without understanding that though it is easy to publish, the book should still undergo a rigorous procedure.

Also, the infrastructure for getting printed books and distribution is still non-existent where indie books are considered. 

Thirdly, there is still a stigma attached to self-published paperbacks among avid readers who are prone to think, with good reason, that the content may be sub-par to consume. However, there are some changes and this stigma is slowly going away.”

That’s what I am going to elaborate ahead and put forth my points.

Why could self publishing prove to be a platform of mixed views? Here’s why.

Most of the self published authors chose the route because they were tired of waiting in the queue – in spite of having a lot of potential to make an influence through their books. So here goes the first advantage: You won’t have to wait for approvals. 

When I self-published my book, it was an easy process. I went to the website of the publishing house, uploaded a few sample chapters through the submission form of the publishing house, and within 2 hours I received a call from their publishing consultant confirming that they accepted my manuscript for publishing. I provided them with the manuscript and the cover (I had got it designed by a cover designer) and in the next 20 days, my book was up on all the major online selling portals in India and worldwide. Done! 

For the marketing part, let me be utmost honest: You are your sole marketer. Yes. The marketing services offered by the self publishing houses do less to nothing for your book and its sales. Why? Let me tell you why. 

Every year, the market clamors with lots and lots of books. Self publishing houses are increasing rapidly so are books.  

Like Banaja Prakashini, a professional book reviewer, states: 

“Self publishing has reduced the publishing industry to sheer business, rather than a way to spread knowledge.

Publicizing leads to ignorance of quality content.

Too many authors as you can easily pay for publishing.

The readers tend to be disappointed with low quality content as there are too many novels.”

That’s the truth. 

The book marketing campaigns that worked a few years ago, won’t be applicable to today’s market as those are repetitive and boring after a certain time. The self publishing houses follow the same pattern for all the books that they market, hence the marketing campaign for your book won’t hold anything unique (the equation of you with them still stays as ‘customer’ and ‘service provider’ so it won’t make a different impact) and your book won’t get the exposure it requires. 

Hence the best practice is to self-market your books. Work on a detailed campaign that you think will work best for your book and its sales. Find experienced people and understand the working of social media and offline marketing groups both for online and offline marketing. The main goal is to create a buzz. Marketing your books is a great advantage to you, but it can also be a disadvantage, as you are doing the things on your own, and you are new to this and are confused regarding doing things. But trust me, patience works wonders. Keep doing your work and you are good to go. Remember the Golden 7 Rule I told above? Follow that too. 

In a market where competition is a lot tougher than it looks, it’s hard to build a market for your books. But again, it depends how innovative you are. I started marketing six months before I actually published (and I owe all of it to my friends and readers), shared excerpts in the start, then asked my friends and readers to change their display pictures to my book’s cover, asked them to share my works, and that helped me reach a larger audience than the one I already had. I had left no stone unturned to market my book. The most recent impressive marketing campaign I saw was from Rahul Vishnoi for his debut novel Who Burned the Moon? and that generated quite a hype for him and his works. That’s why I said above: Don’t hesitate to market your craft. It’s your baby. Be proud of it. 

I think that’s all I can accumulate in this post as of now. Let’s have a summary of these points in the conclusion below.

Although Self Publishing seems like a herculean task, it can work wonders if done right. Of course, there’s no perfect strategy that works for all the books – it has to be unique-there are multiple ideas that actually work.
